For affordable salmon fishing and lodgings with the Old go from Nanaimo north past Qualicum and Campbell River to the remote location of Coal Harbour and Quatsino Sound near Port Hardy where salmon fishing is happening.

The host, the Old, is taking pride in offering full winter accommodations so that enthusiastic guests can take advantage of the most lucrative salmon fishing of all, the winter springs that normally range in size from 18-25 lbs. These fish normally appear in January, February and March to feed on spawning herring and anchovies along the beaches in Quatsino Sound. As for salmon, you cannot find a more beautiful and tasty fish like a winter spring salmon also know as kings or Chinook.

Boating adventures on a winter day in pristine Quatsino Sound and Port Hardy with local fishing guides are experiences to remember. As the normal tourist season is at its lowest this time of the year, you could find that you are alone on the water for hours at a time with only eagles, sea otters or seals for company. This is a normal scene on north Vancouver Island.

After many years of fishing commercially on the coast, the Old Skipper has refitted the vessel to suit recreational use. It is equipped with fail-free hydraulic down-riggers for use with quick release rods on rod holders. The boat is 38 feet long with large cabin and deck space, a fully heated cabin and head plus other accommodations.

Winter time fishing can become a great enjoyment when you can sit inside a heated cabin with beverage of your choice in hand and watch the tip of your rod for the “big one” to hit.

We always carry ice and Styrofoam fish boxes for transport of your catch. Our bed & breakfast facilities offer single and double rooms with baths and some with single entrance.

As restaurant facilities are limited in Coal Harbour, the closest being in Port Hardy, we have for your convenience provided a microwave and fridge. Outside barbeque facilities are also provided. We also welcome guests that have their own boats. We have a large yard with free and safe parking only about a block away from the boat launching ramp.

For winter time charters when fishing for spring salmon, prawns, and crab we recommend daily trips with local experienced fishing guides. At the end of each fishing day we would return to the comfort of the Old Skipper Bed and Breakfast and enjoy a home cooked dinner and just relax. Lunches and beverages will be taken care of and are inclusive in the fishing charters so you don’t have to spend time going to Port Hardy and back. We go to great length to accommodate you so you can have maximum time to only concentrate on serious salmon fishing.

Quatsino Sound also offers great adventures in whale watching in the summer when whales migrate and swim past Coal Harbour. The shores of Quatsino Sound also have an abundance of other wildlife. The black bears are the dominant species.

One customer who came to our bed and breakfast and fishing charters, Larry, from Moose Jaw, Sask., wrote in our guest book - “two fish for bears, no fish for us.” He had left his fish cooler outside on the lawn overnight at our bed and breakfast!
